Surgery at Akron Children's

The American College of Surgeons agrees. They’ve verified Akron Children’s as a Level 1 Children’s Surgery Center. This means we’ve met their rigorous standards for providing and supporting quality improvement, training, care protocols and patient safety for children who need surgical services. These programs help prevent complications, reduce costs and save lives.

Akron Children’s is the only hospital in northeast Ohio to hold this certification.

We tailor everything – from anesthesia to IV fluids – to your child’s size and stage of growth. We use minimally invasive techniques whenever possible. These procedures are safer, offer better results and a shorter recovery time.

We also know the importance of caring for your child’s emotional needs. Our pediatric surgeons examine and treat patients in a way that helps them remain relaxed and cooperative, and they use equipment and facilities specifically designed for babies, kids and teens.

We pride ourselves on having the most experienced pediatric surgeons in northeast Ohio, covering a wide range of subspecialties. As part of the verification process, we had to prove our experts and procedures can handle any surgical situation, no matter how complex. 

Our pediatric anesthesiologists are trained to work specifically with children, whose anesthesia needs are very different from those of adult patients. They provide sedation for thousands of procedures each year, from familiar ear tube surgeries to complex operations on the most fragile NICU babies.

Depending on your child’s surgical procedure, a pre-surgery visit may be part of ensuring patient care is coordinated from the time surgery is scheduled, throughout the procedure and followed by recovery at home. This care is provided by the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH).

Pre-surgery meetings with our Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) in Akron will be at Surgical Services in our main hospital building. PSH appointments in the Mahoning Valley will be in the Leonard J. Fisher Family Building (Building A). If you have been instructed to schedule a pre-surgical visit with PSH and you don't have an appointment scheduled at least 2-3 weeks before your child's visit, call 330-543-7777.
