Nearly 3,000 students across 7 counties in northeast Ohio are jumping on the healthy bandwagon.

It’s made possible through Kohl’s Fit & Healthy Kids program at Akron Children’s. And recently, Kohl’s Cares® awarded a $188,568 grant to continue the initiative.

Through Kohl’s Fit & Healthy Kids, the hospital partners with local schools to help kids make smart decisions about food and physical activity. This year, participating students will increase their physical activity by taking part in either a 10-week walking or jump-rope challenge.

“The grant funds the program’s curriculum and sporting equipment, including pedometers and digital jump ropes,” said Ameeca Holmes, youth fitness specialist in external affairs at Akron Children’s. “After a kick-off rally, we visit participating schools twice a year and coordinate additional physical activities such as an obstacle course, or a basketball or soccer challenge. We also offer educational programs like ‘Rethink Your Drink’ or portion control information.”

Kohl’s commitment to Akron Children’s is made possible through the Kohl’s Cares® cause merchandise program. Kohl’s sells $5 books and plush toys at its stores. One hundred percent of net profit benefits children’s health and education programs nationwide, including hospital partnerships. To date, Kohl’s Cares has donated more than $4 million to  the hospital.

“The program is completely free and promotes health, wellness and gives kids the knowledge to live healthier lifestyles,” noted Holmes. “All items we use throughout the year – jump ropes, pedometers and obstacle course equipment – are kept by the schools or students.”
