Sheryl Handler-Matasar, MD is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Akron Children’s and serves as the Director of Orthopedic Surgery and Clubfoot Clinic for the Mahoning Valley campus. Additionally, she is a part of the Spasticity Clinic, serving as the orthopedic team member. Dr. Handler-Matasar joined Akron Children’s in 2007 after working in orthopedics at the former Tod Children’s Hospital in Youngstown, OH.
Dr. Handler-Matasar began practicing medicine in 2002 and attended medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. She completed her pediatric residency at the Cleveland Clinic and fellowship in pediatric orthopedic surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, New York.
Over the past ten years Dr. Handler-Matasar has contributed to the tremendous growth in pediatric orthopedics. She has helped to expand care to include spine, hand and upper extremities, neuromuscular/clubfeet specialties, and sports medicine.
Dr. Handler is a clinical instructor for the department of orthopedic surgery at Case Western Reserve University. Her publications include PubMed: National Library of Medicine and she is a Google Scholar. Professional honors and memberships include American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Pediatric Orthopaedic Society North America, Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society. She is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Today only 4% of board-certified orthopedic surgeons are women. Dr. Sheryl Handler at Akron Children’s is among that select group.
