Research Mission and Vision
Our History

In 2000, the Pediatric Clinical Trials International Akron (PCTI-Akron) was created as a joint venture between Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron (70% ownership) and Pediatric Clinical Trials International, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Columbus Children’s Hospital (30% ownership).

In mid-2006, the partnership dissolved and the PCTI-Akron name was changed to Akron Children’s Research Center (ACRC).

In 2009, the Considine family donated $1 million and Akron Children’s Research Center was renamed the Rebecca D. Considine Research Institute to reflect their vision of creating a world-class research organization capable of making significant healthcare advances for infants, children and adolescents through scientific discovery.

In 2015, the research institute experienced record expansion as investigators, research teams and support staff worked to build the next generation of our pediatric research program.

From 2017-2018, Akron Children’s hired its first Chief Research Officer and Vice President of Research Administration. Together they have been with our leadership and regional academic and medical partners to expand our research capacity, raise the profile of our research programs, enhance our research operations and spotlight the groundbreaking work of our extraordinary pediatric investigators.

Today, research is accelerating throughout Akron Children’s we build on our established foundation of pediatric research to continue developing a cohesive research community of scientists and clinicians whose sole focus is on advancing the care of every child now, and for generations to come.
