Apply to Our Pediatric Subspecialties or Sub-Internship
We welcome 4th year medical students who are enrolled at an LCME-accredited medical school or participating COCA-accredited American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine member college. You must have completed all core (3rd year) clerkships before the start of Akron Children’s elective rotations for medical students. We use the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) exclusively to receive 4th year medical student applications for pediatric subspecialties and sub-internship (sub-i) opportunities.
Pediatric Subspecialties and Sub-Internship Requirements
- Medical students must be enrolled in an LCME- or AOA-accredited medical school and enrolled as an M4 student at the time of their elective rotations for medical students in pediatric subspecialties.
- Medical school transcript documenting completion of all courses and core clerkships (family medicine, internal medicine, OB/GYN, pediatrics, psychiatry and surgery)
- USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1 test scores. Passage on first attempt is mandatory.
- Current CV with recent photo – include date of birth (xx-xx-xxxx) and the last four digits of your Social Security Number
- Personal Statement including career goals
- The AAMC standardized immunization form must be completed
- Medical liability insurance ($1,000,000/ $3,000,000 aggregate)
- Ten-panel drug screen
- Seasonal influenza vaccination (November-May)
- Official COVID-19 vaccination record card (copy of front and back)
- Criminal background checks
- BCI fingerprinting (pertinent to the State of Ohio)
- FBI fingerprinting confirming disqualifying convictions under ORC 2151.86. Akron Children’s does not accept background checks from third parties – only an official FBI Background Check is accepted.
- Proof of health insurance
Acceptance to an M4 elective rotation or sub-internship does not guarantee a pediatric residency program interview.
