Akron Children’s Hospital welcomes new site director for neonatology

Justin Buland, DO, has been selected as the new site director for neonatology for the hospital’s services in the Mahoning Valley.

Dr. Buland has been a staff neonatologist at Akron Children’s NICU at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital and the Special Care Nursery at the Beeghly campus since September 2021. He will transition into his role as site director starting March 5, 2023.

Previously, Dr. Buland was the practice medical director for Mednax, UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg and UPMC Lititz, Harrisburg, Pa.

Dr. Buland attended Villanova University prior to attending Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his pediatrics residency at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia and neonatal-perinatal fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Buland has participated in significant research on lipid mediators in lung injury and pulmonary hypertension, and his primary clinical interests are focused on bronchopulmonary dysplasia and antimicrobial stewardship, along with resident and student education. 

Dr. Barb Clouser, the current site director for neonatology, has been instrumental in leading the neonatology team’s growth and development and will begin her retirement in April 2023.  

Akron Children’s Neonatology provides the highest level of intensive care to sick and premature newborns. The most common prenatal conditions treated are breathing, intestinal and surgical problems, congenital heart defects, prematurity and very low birth weight.
