Dual rayon swab culturette collected from throat source. Eswab from throat source also acceptable.
Eswab collected from rectal or vaginal source.

Cause for Rejection:
Quantity not sufficient, improper specimen type, improper storage/transport, improper swab, dry swab over 24 hours old, multiple swabs per vial, mislabeled, or unlabeled.

Transport at room temperature. Upon arrival in laboratory, store refrigerated.

Throat Swabs:
NOTE: Do not obtain throat cultures if the epiglottis is inflamed. Sampling may cause serious respiratory obstruction.
1. Remove the dual rayon swab from the collection kit package.
2. Depress tongue gently with tongue depressor.
3. Visualize throat area for obvious purulent areas. Swab between the tonsillar pillars and behind the uvula. Avoid touching the cheeks, tongue, uvula or lips.
4. Swab back and forth across the posterior pharynx, tonsillar area and any inflamed or ulcerated areas to obtain sample.

Vaginal Swabs:
1. Collect using a standard tip or mini-tip Eswab
2. Separate the labia and swab high inside vaginal canal.
3. Break off swab at the red score line into the transport tube containing 1.0mL liquid media.

Rectal Swabs:
1. Collect using a standard tip or mini-tip Eswab
2. Pass the tip of the swab beyond the anal sphincter, anywhere from 1cm in infants to 4cm in larger adolescents.
3. Rotate the swab to sample the anal crypts for 30 seconds.
4. Break the swab at the score line into the transport tube containing 1.0mL liquid media.

Additional Info:
Throat specimens are cultured for Group A Streptococcus only. Orders must state specific site of specimen. If patient has a positive Group A Antigen test, a Strep culture is not necessary. Antibiotic sensitivities will be performed only on non-respiratory sites.
