Most people think of a virgin as someone who hasn’t had vaginal sex. So, if you use a tampon and haven’t had vaginal sex, you’re still a virgin.

Why do people wonder about this? Females who haven’t had vaginal sex usually have a hymen, a very thin piece of skin-like tissue that partly covers the opening of the vagina. The first time they have vaginal sex, the hymen may stretch, tear, and bleed a little. It’s sometimes said that the hymen is "broken."

Putting in a tampon can stretch the hymen and even tear it, but this isn't common.
