Originally from northern Vermont, Akron Children’s holds a special place in Dr. Jordan Weith’s heart because it’s where she was first introduced to pediatric psychology during her graduate training. In 2017 she moved to Ohio to pursue her doctorate in clinical psychology at Kent State University. After completing her internship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Dr. Weith returned to Akron Children’s for her fellowship and has now joined the organization as a pediatric psychologist.
“I specifically chose pediatric psychology because of the opportunity to be integrated within multi-disciplinary teams with providers of multiple specialties allowing me to focus on the whole child and take a more holistic approach.”
In her work, she utilizes evidence-based techniques that have been shown to help children and their families. “I prioritize building a trusting relationship and safe space with each patient by actively listening about their interests and what matters to them,” she said.
Below she shares a little more about herself.
What are some of your interests outside of work that help you connect with children?
I spend a lot of my time with my dog, Odie, and my two cats, Loki and Eisa. I find that many of my patients and I can connect by sharing about the special pets in our lives. My pup is a certified therapy dog and is going to start coming with me to Akron Children’s to participate in animal assisted therapy. I am excited to be able to incorporate Odie into my work and to observe all the benefits I know he will provide to kids and families at the hospital.
How do you like to unwind?
I enjoy spending time with my husband Gabe and my 9-month-old son, Peter (and, of course, the cats and dog). We like hiking, exploring new restaurants in the area, playing with the animals and going on adventures with Peter’s aunt, uncle and 1-year-old cousin who live nearby.
What’s one thing about yourself that most people don’t know?
A lot of people do not know that my mother is also a clinical psychologist. Growing up I was not interested in pursuing psychology and instead I wanted to go into the medical field. After taking an introduction to psychology course I was immediately hooked. My mother and I are very close, and we have been able to collaborate on multiple clinical and research projects together. We especially enjoy traveling together to conferences.
What would you change about yourself if you could?
I have always wanted to be a morning person. I imagine waking up at 6 a.m., going for a run and slowly drinking a cup of coffee as the sun rises. In reality, I am not a morning person, and generally there is a lot of chaos in the morning!
