Medical Assistant Seth Vizzo understands that visiting a doctor’s office can be intimidating for kids. That’s why he works to make it less so for his patients at Akron Children’s Pediatric (ACP) Wooster. His approach emphasizes the importance of being approachable and engaging, which he believes is essential for effective patient care.
“Getting the patient comfortable in the office is one of my main goals,” he explained. ” I love interacting with my patients and seeing the different personalities of the kids.
“I try to stoop down so I’m on their level which helps me create a bond and be a familiar face they can trust,” he added.
In addition to easing anxiety, Seth plays a crucial role ensuring patients receive necessary medical care, from administering vaccines to conducting hearing and vision tests. Since joining Akron Children’s seven months ago, Seth has found a sense of family among his colleagues. “They make it very enjoyable to come to work every day,” he said.
Recently, the team organized a pumpkin-decorating event where kids and parents voted for their favorites. “It’s a great way to bond and have fun with the patients,” he said.
As he’s grown in his role, Seth has embraced the training required to help him excel at his job, including medical classes and Epic training. “The way I have grown professionally is my face-to-face communication with patients,” he said, highlighting how essential these skills are in pediatric care.
In addition to Akron Children’s, Seth works part time as a firefighter/EMT with the Wooster Township Fire Department. Outside of work he finds balance through a combination of faith, physical activity and spending time with his girlfriend, Kemery, who he says complements him in every way.
“My faith in God and the way He works in my life helps keep me balanced,” said Seth. “I also try to stay physically active through gym workouts and running.”
Seth emphasized the importance of teamwork in his role, acknowledging that it takes a collective effort to provide excellent care. “Honestly, the people I work with make it easy,” he said. “If one of us is drowning with orders, there’s no hesitation from someone to help you out.
“I can’t say enough about how I appreciate my coworkers,” he added. “The biggest thing is we have fun. I’m laughing every day from the silly things that occur.”
For anyone thinking about a career in medical assisting, especially in a children’s hospital, Seth highlights the importance of building trust and connection – reflecting his understanding of the unique challenges and rewards that come with working with young patients.
“Come to work excited,” he said. “Build a relationship with the patients, even if it’s just for two minutes. And be patient with the kids.”
As for what makes Akron Children’s “more than a job,” Seth said, “It’s the type of place where everyone says good morning and asks how you are doing. They treat their employees well and it’s just a great place to get to do the job you love.”
