Congratulations to April Petty, BSN, RN, CPN, a staff nurse at Akron Children’s Special Care Nursery at Wooster Community Hospital, for receiving the 2024 Faces of Care award. This prestigious recognition, presented by the Greater Cleveland Nurses Association and Cleveland Magazine, celebrates nurses in Northeast Ohio who have made significant contributions to the nursing community.
April has worked for Akron Children’s since 1998. Her nomination highlights her exceptional patient care and compassionate approach.
“Patient, kind and judgment-free care is always given to every family, regardless of the social situations or stressors that come with that patient, making her a standout nurse,” said Rachel Sweeney, a staff nurse at Akron Children’s and April’s nominator.
“April constantly puts the patient first. She is the definition of family-centered care, and her heart is big enough to hold all the patients she cares for during her shift,” Rachel added. “She actively helps her co-workers and assists with other patients when she has time and the help is needed, without being asked to do so.”
April’s commitment to teamwork and attention to the extra details make a difference in the lives of the families she cares for.
“Families have expressed their gratitude for her care. They particularly appreciate the little arts and crafts she creates as keepsakes during the holidays,” said Rachel. “These thoughtful gestures mean the world to families during some of the most stressful times in their lives.”
April’s selfless acts extend beyond her own patients.
“She will never let a patient cry, even if it’s not one of her patients. “She will go soothe and comfort [patients] without any hesitation, providing help during hands-on care if needed. She truly embodies the definition of going the extra mile,” Rachel said.
In addition to outstanding patient care, April plays a vital role in the professional development of her unit. She assists with unit-based council initiatives and ensures that the policies in use are up-to-date and accurately reflect the high standards of care provided.
She currently serves as her unit’s Magnet representative as well as on Nursing Shared Governance Council, Healthy Work Environment Council, Clinical Practice Council, Professional Development Council and Quality Council.
April’s dedication, compassion and commitment to excellence make her a deserving recipient of the 2024 Faces of Care award.
“The joy I find in providing guidance and care to parents and patients is immeasurable. Nothing compares to the feeling of holding those precious babies and helping the family navigate any challenges and triumphs throughout their stay,” said April.
“I am blessed to work alongside exceptional nurses who share my dedication and passion for providing optimal patient care,” she added. “The support system that surrounds me is invaluable, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to give back and support my fellow nurses. I’m truly thankful for the recognition and look forward to continuing to make a positive impact on the lives of those I care for.”
