A new emergency room (ER) is will open April 19 at Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley. Designed through the eyes of a child, the new ER features input from patients, their families and staff.
The new space is adjacent to the former emergency room that opened in 2008 and was designed for 80 visits a day. But in more recent years, well over 80 patients a day were cared for by clinicians. 
The new ER expanded from 9,600 square feet to 34,700 square feet. It features:
- 23 treatment rooms, which includes 3 behavioral health flex rooms. Previously there were 17 treatment rooms.
- Easy access for Air Bear, Akron Children’s dedicated pediatric helicopter and new access for ambulances.
- Dedicated suture rooms
- Radiology services that use lower amounts of radiation
- Student artwork representing Poland, Canfield and Boardman schools
Ground was broken in the fall of 2021 on the $31 million construction project. 
The project was supported with more than $3 million contributed through the generosity of the community and donors, with the following donors contributed $200,000 or more:

- Jim and Ellen Tressel
“This expanded emergency department is an investment in the Mahoning Valley community and builds on Akron Children’s commitment to bring care closer to home,” said Paul Olivier, vice president of Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley Enterprises. “The generosity of our donors as well as the input from our patient families, employees and construction professionals ensure the infants, children and teens in this area have the access to care they deserve.” 
The new ER is located at 6505 Market St., Boardman in Building B and will open April 19.
