On Oct. 13, Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley broke ground on the $31 million, 22,500-square-foot expansion of our Emergency Department (ED) in Boardman.
The project, which is scheduled to be completed later this year, will more than triple the size of our current ED, which was built to accommodate up to 80 patient visits per day but has grown to experience up to 180 per day. The number of patient rooms will increase and more clinical support spaces will be added, including rooms specially designed for patients facing emotional and behavioral emergencies.
Donor support has been crucial to helping fund the project. And on the day of the groundbreaking, hospital leaders and staff were joined by community members and donors to commemorate the occasion. Among them were members of the Moran family.
“The emergency department expansion is needed in this valley,” said Fred Moran, who with his son Pat Moran owns Window World franchises in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Michigan. “And the valley is so blessed to have Akron Children’s here.”
The Moran family and Window World have supported our hospital through the Miracles & Promises Radiothon since 2016. But the family’s relationship with pediatric health care goes back decades.
“My son was born with a cleft lip, and we got involved with all kinds of doctors at Tod Children’s Hospital,” said Pat. “We didn’t have much back then, but they took care of us. Today we’re so blessed to be able to help Akron Children’s, and it all stems from when my kids were little. That’s what I appreciate about Akron Children’s – families don’t have to worry financially about getting care for their kids.”
Recently, the Moran family and Window World made a generous $250,000 gift toward the expansion project. They were inspired by the gifts made by community leaders including Leonard “Lenny” Fisher and the Cafaro Foundation. And the Morans hope that other businesses will follow their example.
“We can do more by giving to others than by keeping it in the bank account,” said Fred. “It will do more good. Pat and I hope that our gift will help make the community more aware of the project – especially smaller businesses like us. I thought, if others can do it, then we can do it. And if we can do it, so can you.”
