Five-year-old Mallory Maughan had been practicing all week, commented her mother, Jill.
“She’s taking this very seriously,” said Maughan, about her family’s opportunity to help cut the ribbon to celebrate Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley’s latest addition – a 51,000-square-foot expansion set to open July 11.
On Thurs., June 15, Maughan explained to a crowd of nearly 200 hospital administrators, staff, donors and local officials how her family, including triplets Ali, Charlie and Eddie, had benefited from having quality pediatric care right in their backyard.
In addition to Maughan; William Considine, Akron Children’s President and CEO; and Sharon Hrina, vice president of Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley, both spoke about the hospital’s commitment to grow and expand services available for children in the community.
“This addition and the growth that we’ve experienced in our programs and services is the vision that we have for children and families of the Valley – to provide the very best in pediatric care, close to home and regardless of ability to pay,” said Considine. “We are truly humbled by the support that the donors from the Mahoning Valley have shown for their children’s hospital.”
Guests were given a sneak peek of the facility, which was funded through the hospital’s capital budget and the generous philanthropic support of the community. As part of the Vision for Our Valley’s Children Campaign, donors create a legacy of caring for the area’s children through their contributions, which represented $3.7 million from 42 donors toward the project’s overall $20-million budget. To recognize this support, the new building features an interactive wall with information about those who’ve supported the hospital in addition to named entities that are featured within the new space (see below for the list).
“As you walk through the addition today, you’ll see firsthand how we designed this new facility through the eyes of a child,” said Hrina. “From the signature art in the entry to the ball machine on the first floor to the throwing wall in the sports rehab area. Our sole focus is children, and I think that comes through loud and clear.”
