In 2005, Randy and I were asked to assist with the Junior High youth group at our church. We were looking forward to the relationship and leadership opportunities.
Randy has a very infectious smile and his love for people overflows before he speaks a word. He’s also the typical guy who enjoys to rough house. One student in particular became an instant friend who Randy grew to love.
Matthew Helmick would come up to Randy on any occasion and give him a swift hard pat on the back or shot to the kidney to start a good fun match with him. Matthew came up to me several times asking if he could be the first to know when we became pregnant, and if he could babysit our child.
I reminded him that we would let our families know first if and when we were pregnant, and then we’d let him know. Matthew also asked if we would name our son after him. I told him that we had names already picked out if we would have a son. He would just stand there and give us a wide grin. His contagious smile and ornery personality would often leave you wondering what he was up to.
On this day three years ago, Randy received a phone call saying that the student had been in a tractor accident sending our dear friend into the arms of our Heavenly Father. The news was overwhelming. As Randy and I sat in our living room we recalled the request. If our little man is half the fun, ornery, bubbly, intelligent, sweet, Jesus-loving person our dear friend was, we’ll be blessed.
So here’s to you Matthew Helmick. We love you and think of you often. May Jordan Matthew Pollock follow in your footsteps and follow Jesus.
