We met Jordan Matthew Pollock 9 days ago. He was a whopping 8lbs 6oz, 20 inches long. The shock still hasn’t worn off that our little man fit so snuggly in mommy’s tummy.
The day of the c-section was a little crazy. Randy and I were a little anxious, but were able to sleep the night before. We then took some time to talk and listen to 3 songs that we had picked out to represent our journey thus far. They included Blessings by Laura Story, Oh How He Loves Us by David Crowder, and Build Us Back by the Newsboys. Each song has given us encouragement during our highs and lows.
As far as the delivery, everything seemed to go as planned. I was more upset about getting an IV placed in my arm than a spinal in my back. Randy was able to watch the entire c-section. I was so preoccupied – asking him if he was ok or needed to sit down – that I didn’t realize I was being split open to have our lil peanut delivered. Our nurse anesthetist kept me posted on what I needed to know, including, “Did you know you were having a boy!”
What sweet, sweet words. We would have been just as happy with a girl, but our little man has put a new sparkle in our eyes. Jordan was breech at birth so one of the first sites Randy saw was the lesion on his back. It was much larger than either of us had anticipated.
We were so thankful to have Dr. Feick as our neonatologist for Jordan’s birth. They showed me his face above the curtain then whisked him away to a warm room to prepare him for transport. Randy was able to spend some time with our little man as he was prepared. He gave us a little cry to let us know he was going to be all right. His back was covered and wrapped to protect his open lesion.
After I was closed, Dr. Stewart took the time to sit by me and tell me that none of this was my fault, and though our little man might not be the fastest kid, he was going to be smart. I was then taken to the recovery room to wait to get a glimpse of Peanut.
My main concern over the past 5 months has been whether I would be able to hold my baby before transport. The wonderful staff made it a priority to allow me to hold and gaze at Jordan Matthew for 5 minutes. Sure, I would have loved more time, but it was important to get him the care he needed at Akron Children’s. I cherish the time that Randy, Jordan and I had, along with the pictures the staff took for us. It was my link to our little one while admitted at Akron General. I can’t tell you how many times I scrolled through those pictures.
I want to give the delivery staff kudos. We have counted 12 staff members who helped our family unite for the first time. My nurses Angie and Lisa made me as comfortable as possible before and after, including going the extra mile to find applesauce for me while waiting for my room.
Once I was settled, Randy made his way over to spend some time with our little man. We are so thankful that our Father the Great Physician brought us our little Peanut as we continue to pray for healing to his little body.
