Akron Children’s welcomes 2 new physician assistants (PAs) to our Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders to add to our growing multidisciplinary team.
In their roles, PAs Gillian Brenner and Ashten Yoder will provide comprehensive and compassionate care to children and teens with blood disorders and cancer. They will collaborate closely with other members of the healthcare team to assess patient needs, develop treatment plans and monitor progress, while also educating and guiding families on their children’s treatment journeys.
“PAs are an integral part of our hematology-oncology team,” said Courtney Culbertson, APRN-CNP, co-leader of hematology-oncology APPs. “Our hope is that they grow both professionally and personally in this role because it takes a special person to care for our patient population.”
Welcome Gillian Brenner and Ashten Yoder. Both of these PAs share a love for the complexity of conditions in this field of medicine and a commitment to making a positive impact — both physically and emotionally — on patients and families during this challenging time.

When did you decide to become a provider and why?
For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to work in health care. During high school, I shadowed a physician assistant and learned all about the profession through a program called Athletic Healthcare and Fitness. I instantly knew this was what I wanted to do when I grew up. I loved their ability to see patients on their own, while also working closely with other healthcare providers. I shadowed many other PAs, and everyone seemed to truly love what they did and that solidified my desire to become one myself.
What impression do you hope to leave with your patients each day?
I hope to leave my patients and families with a sense of trust and comfort. It’s important to me that they feel comfortable asking questions and know their concerns are genuinely heard. Given the many challenges these patients encounter, I think it’s essential that we as providers instill hope and support throughout their journey. I want my patients and families to feel empowered and know that we are all working together toward the best possible outcomes.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Kent, Ohio, and have lived here my entire life. I attended Kent State University, where I majored in Exercise Science and went on to Mount Union to complete my Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. The sense of community I’ve always felt here has been a significant influence on my personal and professional growth. I’m excited about the opportunity to now serve this community as a healthcare provider!
How do you unwind from a busy day?
I like to come home and walk my dog. He is an 8-month-old German Shepherd named Goose. He’s silly and full of energy. After we walk, I like to relax with a good book. I enjoy all types of fiction books, but my favorites are thrillers and fantasy. Getting lost in a story that keeps me on the edge of my seat is a perfect way to unwind and recharge for another day ahead!

What impression do you hope to leave with your patients each day?
I hope my patients see the dedication I have to them and their care every day. I hope they understand that I see them as a person and not just a patient, and that I truly enjoy being part of their care team.
What’s the most memorable thing that’s ever happened to you as a provider?
While rotating in the ER, I had a patient come in alone who was very scared. She had a lot of symptoms, but didn’t know the cause. As I asked questions about her symptoms, I also spent a lot of time reassuring her that she was in a safe place, and we’d take good care of her. She started crying and thanked me for being so intentional with her. She said I reminded her of her daughter who also worked in medicine, and it made her feel better.
This was such a substantial moment for me, even as a student, because it reminded me that it’s not just my knowledge that’s important, but it’s also how I treat patients that makes a huge impact on their care.
What is one thing you haven’t done yet that you would like to achieve?
I would love to travel to all the country’s national parks!
What do you do when you aren’t working?
I love to read, hike, and spend time with my family and friends. I really enjoy art and crafting, and I’m also a huge coffee enthusiast! My fiancé and I love to try new coffee shops and tour them in different areas.
