Ten years ago, Emma Laubacher, attended Walsh University for undergraduate and graduate school. A native of North Canton, Ohio, she was familiar with Akron Children’s and the important role to provide quality, pediatric health care for communities outside of Akron.
“Akron Children’s is a pillar, shaping the lives of so many children and families,” shared Emma while reflecting on the last decade and her career path to the organization.
During her time at Walsh University, Emma co-founded Dance Marathon to benefit Akron Children’s. The 12-hour fundraiser keeps college students on their toes, literally, dancing in color-coordinated teams and participating in friendly challenges across the dance floor. The student-led philanthropic movement generates thousands of dollars each year for Akron Children’s. This past year, Walsh University donated $31,000 to the hospital foundation.
“I am proud this fundraiser continues to thrive and to be a part of kickstarting the Dance Marathon tradition,” said Emma.
Describe your role at Akron Children’s today.
I am a family nurse practitioner, practicing in pediatrics for four years. I chose to be in primary care, because I love to help shape children’s view of health and health care. I enjoy providing educational tools to families I treat.
I completed my nursing and nurse practitioner clinicals through Akron Children’s. During clinicals I saw how the employees enjoyed their work and appreciated one another through the quality of care each provided. I admire the constant drive to improve patient care and the family experience. I am delighted to be a part of it at our New Philadelphia location.
What unique or different skills do you have that help you practice medicine?
I had the opportunity to work with a large refugee/immigrant population in Dayton. I learned so much from that experience. I am blessed to love my job and have a passion for it. I hope that shines through in the empathetic care I provide.
Who makes up your family, including pets and their names?
My family consists of my husband, Elliott, my eleven-month-old daughter, Isla, and our dog, Sully. I am most looking forward to watching Isla grow up and learn. It is a joy to watch her experience new situations and explore the world around her.
What piece of advice did someone give you when you were young that still resonates with you today?
Be where your feet are. It is so important to be present, to be an active listener and to feel and experience moments as they happen.
