Growing up in Akron, Taylor Moresea became familiar with Akron Children’s from an early age as she herself was a patient. After being treated by various providers, she made it a goal to one day be a part of the organization. As part of her journey, Taylor served as a student physician assistant, shadowing health care staff and completing a clinical rotation at Akron Children’s.
“I knew that I would be supported and appreciated as an APP and have a fulfilling role in helping patients and families every day,” shares Moresea.
Describe what a night house officer does at Akron Children’s and what attracted you to this role.
The night house officer position falls within the Pediatric Surgery department. My role as a physician assistant is to cover multiple areas of surgery at night, which include general surgery, trauma, burns and ENT. Throughout the night, I see consults, manage floor patients, assist with trauma activations, and manage any other issues that may arise throughout the night.
I have always been a night owl. Finding a position that was at night was a perfect fit for me. I also really enjoy having a work-life balance. Working nights allows me to have a lot of my days open to spend time with friends and family.
I knew in the beginning of my career that I wanted to practice medicine in a pediatric subspecialty. I came across the night house officer role, and I thought it was an amazing opportunity that would allow me to expand my knowledge base and practice at the top of my license. I love having the opportunity to see a wide variety of patients and work with different teams throughout the hospital.
What led you to a career as a physician assistant?
One of the biggest reasons I became a healthcare provider is because of my greatest role model, my dad. My dad is also a physician assistant (PA), and I was lucky enough to see him grow as a provider throughout my life. He showed me early on how impactful being a provider can be. I became passionate about helping others because of him and that led me to pursue a similar career as a PA. My husband is also a PA and I am grateful I can share my passion with people I love.
What keeps you motivated in the middle of the night?
Typically, the nights are busy and eventful, the shift can go by quickly. It also helps to talk with others who are working and to keep your body moving so you don’t feel too tired.
If you were not working night shift, what would you see yourself doing professionally?
I would see myself still working in a pediatric specialty. I would want a role that encompasses different sub-specialties allowing me to continue expanding my knowledge base. I also enjoy teaching and could see myself educating future PAs.
Who makes up your family, including pets and their names?
My family includes myself, my husband, John, my two dogs, Flynn and Marshal, and two cats, Samus and Forest. I have incredible parents, Jared and Nicole, and two amazing younger sisters, Olivia and Rowan.
What do you do when you are not working?
Outside of work I keep myself busy with hobbies. I am the person who finds a new hobby every week. My main hobbies include reading, coloring and building Legos. I love being outdoors, and I stay active by running, doing yoga and lake activities such as boating and surfing.
What is one thing on your bucket list?
My bucket list trip is to go to Thailand and visit the elephant sanctuaries.
What question would you most like to know the answer to?
Can my dogs talk to one another?
