A new emergency department on Akron Children’s Beeghly Campus in Boardman opened on April 19.
The new space is adjacent to the former emergency department that opened in 2008, which was designed for 80 visits a day. In recent years, more than double that number of patients have been treated each day.
The new facility increases the emergency department’s square footage from 9,600 to 34,700. Designed through the eyes of a child with input from patient families and staff, the expanded ED features:
- 23 treatment rooms, including three behavioral health flex rooms
- A private behavioral health waiting room
- Isolation rooms
- Easy access for Air Bear, Akron Children’s dedicated transport helicopter
- Dedicated suture rooms
- Radiology services that use lower amounts of radiation
- Artwork from students representing Poland, Canfield and Boardman schools
The project was supported with $3,165,539 contributed through the generosity of our community and donors.
“This expanded emergency department is an investment in the Mahoning Valley community and builds on Akron Children’s commitment to bring care closer to home,” said Paul Olivier, vice president of Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley. “The generosity of our donors as well as input from patient families, employees and construction professionals ensure the infants, children and teens in this area have access to the care they deserve.”
