Grand Rounds: Discord to Harmony: Healing and Repairing Trust after Emotionally Challenging Interactions

05-03-2024

By Emily Scott, MD, and Joy Burt, RN, MSN , Akron Children's Hospital, Akron, OH

Objectives (Educational Content) :

1. Recognize the importance and benefits of using relationship-centered communication for patients, families and providers during challenging interactions. 2. Demonstrate the value of Empathy by using the ‘PEARLS' and 'HEART' models of communication. 3. Discuss resources for caregivers after challenging interactions to help heal.

Target Audience:

General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.

Identified Gap:

Although most patient experiences are very positive, some feedback can be negative and there are multiple factors that influence this perception and result in less than desired patient-provider experiences and interactions. Relationship centered communication for patients, families, and providers can bridge the gap between patients and providers to increase trust and solidify the patient-provider relationship.
