Our Headache Clinic brings together pediatric neurologists, psychologists and nurse practitioners to evaluate the causes and determine the correct diagnosis to treat your child.
Learn more...About Headache Clinic
Headaches can be caused by several environmental, physical and emotional factors, including head injuries, fevers, stress, weather changes, and food, as well as inherited disorders.
During your child's first visit to our headache clinic, a neurologist will collect a detailed medical history and conduct a physical exam. Your child will also meet with our pediatric psychologist to address possible non-medical and emotional factors. If necessary, diagnostic tests will be performed, such as a CT scan or MRI. The visit takes approximately 3 hours.
We offer several treatments, including:
- Behavioral treatments and non-drug interventions — These include balanced nutrition, good sleep hygiene, moderate daily exercise, and relaxation training.
- Identifying headache triggers — Certain foods - such as caffeine, dairy or processed meats - can cause headaches.
- Drug therapies — Medications that prevent and treat headaches.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy — This short-term psychological intervention teaches children the skills to identify and change unhelpful thoughts and emotions that can contribute to headaches.
- BioFeedback —Control over body temperature, muscle tension and heart rate can reduce pain and prevent headaches.
- Physical Therapy — A combination of adjustments and massage can relieve tension and correct posture.
