About Head Injury Clinic

Your child may be referred to our head injury clinic if:

  • Their head injury is complicated.
  • Concussion symptoms last more than 2-3 weeks.
  • Your child has had a previous head injury.
  • Your child has other neurological problems.

Your first appointment to our head injury program will last 2-3 hours. During the visit:

  • A medical assistant will assess vital signs and complete a vision screening.
  • A speech-language pathologist will conduct a cognitive communication assessment before your child’s medical examination. This assessment will specifically look at aspects of memory and language that are more susceptible to impairments after a head injury.
  • A nurse will give a short survey to assess mood changes. The nurse will also teach about nutrition, fluid intake, sleep hygiene and common headache triggers.
  • A pediatric neurologist, physiatrist or nurse practitioner will perform a thorough history and neurological exam. Based on the history you provide and the clinical findings, we will recommend a treatment plan that may include medication, imaging or therapies.
